To install your Root Web:

  1. From Home|Services|WWW, click on the pencil next to the enabled web site that you want to enable the root web for.
  2. Click on the FRONT PAGE tab, and check the "Enable Root Web" tab.
  3. Type in the username of the NetMAX user that will be the "Owner of Root Web", or click on the SELECT button and select a NetMAX user from the list of available users by checking the box next to their name, and clicking on SELECT.
  4. Click on RETURN, and then click on STORE.
  5. Click on COMMIT, and COMMIT the changes.

NOTE: If you create a path for a FrontPage enabled web site, and don't use the default "external" directory, make sure that the permissions on the directory that you create are read, write, and executable by the user "nobody".

Once your root web has been installed, to maintain your website, for example www.yourdomain.com:

FrontPage 98

  1. Go online.
  2. Start Microsoft FrontPage 98.
  3. Select File -> Open FrontPage Web (this screen may already popup when you start FrontPage)
  4. Click on the [More Webs...] button.
  5. Type www.yourdomain.com in the "Select a Web server or disk location" field.
  6. Click on the [List Webs] button and wait...
  7. Select the in the list of webs found and click on [OK].
  8. Login by entering the username and password that was setup for the NetMAX user that you have assigned to be the owner of the root web, and click on [OK].

FrontPage 2000 & 2002

  1. Go online.
  2. Start Microsoft FrontPage 2000.
  3. Select File -> Open Web, and click on the "Web Folders" icon on the left.
  4. Type http://www.yourdomain.com in the "Folder name" field and click on [Open].
  5. Login by entering the username and password that was setup for the NetMAX user that you have assigned to be the owner of the root web, and click on [OK].

Important Information:

In the instructions above, we assume that you have setup the hostname to use for your web site to be "www". If you have specified a different hostname under Home|Network|Naming, and Home|Services|WWW, ensure that you use the proper FQDN when connecting with your FrontPage client.

It is always recommended that you maintain your FrontPage managed web site in the above manner. You will always want to connect to your root web, and manage it remotely, in real time. You do not want to edit the content offline on your hard drive and then attempt to publish it to the web server. This will only cause problems related to TCP timeouts, and your content is bound to get out of sync. Also, after you enable your root web, you never want to edit any of the content of the web site using any method besides using your FrontPage client in this manner. You do not want to FTP anything to the web directory.

The FrontPage configuration files can take up to 30% of the space required by your actual data files depending on the extensions required. Therefore, it is recommended that you do not enable FrontPage for a web site, unless you are going to use FrontPage to manage it.

The only known issues are:

  1. You can not create subwebs from the client, because it requires modifying the configuration file for the http daemon (apache).
  2. FrontPage cannot be on two sites with the same URL but different ports. So www.mydomain.com:80 and www.mydomain.com:443 cannot both have FrontPage. But, in the QuickDomain setup the unsecure site is www.mydomain.com:80 and the secure site secure.mydomain.com:443 are different so FrontPage will be ok for that situation.

Refer to your FrontPage manual for further instructions.

We can only provide limited support for FrontPage. If you experience problems:

  1. Follow the steps outlined above.
  2. Open your web and select Tools -> Recalculate Hyperlinks
  3. Consult your manual.
  4. Contact Microsoft's Technical Support Staff for assistance.
