2. Passing Public IP Addresses Through NetMAX Hello from the NetMAX Technical department! This month's tech article answers the burning question: how do I pass a public IP address through my NetMAX to a machine behind it? When referring to "public IP" addresses in this document, we mean any valid IP address that does not resemble the following (or fall into the following network ranges):
Generally speaking it is not possible to put a host on the same public network as your NetMAX system's Internet-connected interface. This makes it difficult to perform firewalling functions for your machines which are directly connected to the Internet. The answer here is to use "Proxy Arp" and "Machine Groups" to make the NetMAX a "traffic bridge" between the Internet and the specified Internet hosts. The NetMAX Team has just returned from Chicago, where we visited HP World 2004, the Solutions and Technology Conference & Expo. The NetMAX Team went to the largest HP users conference in the country to announce our forthcoming NetMAX 5 Server products, built on powerful HP ProLiant platforms. While we were there, we met new and existing NetMAX customers, gave away a NetMAX Server, and generally enjoyed our visit to the windy city. Thanks to HP and the NetMAX users who stopped by and visited us! We would very much like to hear from you -- especially about how you use NetMAX and Linux in your business, and how we can make NetMAX better suited to your needs. Let us know about your likes, dislikes, and general comments. We are especially interested in the type of additions to NetMAX that you would like to see as we continue to develop the NetMAX line. Thank you! |
